5 SIMPLE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HOME WARM THIS WINTER:

1. Stop Draughts Around Doors & Windows
Cold air creeping in around doors and windows can quickly make a room feel chilly. Draught excluders, door seals and inexpensive window sealing strips are easy ways to help keep warm air inside.
2. Make the Most of Your Curtains
Open curtains and blinds during the day to let natural sunlight warm your home, then close them as soon as it gets dark to help trap that heat inside. Heavier or thermal-lined curtains can be particularly useful during the colder months.
3. Keep the Heat Where You Need It
Close doors between heated and unheated rooms and turn radiators down in rooms you rarely use. There’s little point heating the spare bedroom all day if nobody is in it!
4. Use Your Heating Timer Wisely
Rather than leaving the heating running for long periods, set your timer around your daily routine. SEAI recommends switching heating on around 30 minutes before you need it and off around 30 minutes before you no longer need it.
5. Don’t Let Heat Disappear Up the Chimney
An unused open fireplace can allow warm air to escape and cold air to enter. If a fireplace isn’t being used, a suitable chimney draught excluder or chimney balloon can help reduce heat loss — just remember it must always be removed before lighting a fire.
